Look for a stretch whose end resembles its start.
Drag the frame over the picture to choose what ends up in the profile GIF. Grab a corner to zoom in on a face or a detail.
Pick a file to start.
Avatar or banner
Discord gives an animated profile two places to move, and they want different shapes. Pick one at the top of the settings and the frame over your clip locks to that shape.
| Avatar | Profile banner | |
|---|---|---|
| Shape here | Square, 256×256 | Wide strip, 680×240 |
| How Discord shows it | Cropped to a circle | Across the top of your profile card |
| What covers it | Nothing, but the corners are cut off | Your avatar overlaps the lower left |
| Animation needs | Nitro | Nitro |
Three things people find out too late
Without Nitro, only the first frame shows. Discord accepts the GIF either way, but non-subscribers and some previews see a still image. Make sure that first frame works on its own.
The circle eats the corners. A face pushed to the edge of the square will lose an ear. Leave a margin all round.
The banner's lower left belongs to your avatar. Put the motion in the middle or on the right, where nothing sits on top of it.
Loops that do not look like loops
A profile is glanced at, not watched. If the clip visibly jumps back to its start every few seconds, people notice the jump rather than the animation. Look for a stretch where the last frame resembles the first: a head turning and turning back, rain, a flickering light. Trim tight around it and three or four seconds is plenty.
Questions
Why 256×256 for the avatar?
Discord shows avatars small in chat but larger in profile pop-ups. 256 pixels stays sharp in both places without making the file heavy.
Does it work for server banners too?
This page targets the personal profile banner. Server banners have a different shape and depend on the server's boost level.
