Your files

Files you open in any GIFUP tool are never uploaded, with two optional exceptions described below. Conversion runs inside your browser through a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg: the browser opens your video or GIF locally, processes it and gives you the result. The file does not cross the network, we never receive it, and so there is nothing for us to store or delete.

Closing or reloading the tab discards everything. We keep no copies, no thumbnails and no conversion history.

Exception one: hosting a file with Get a link

After a conversion, the result panel offers a Get a link button. Nothing happens until you press it. If you do, the finished GIF, WebP or MP4 (never your original) is uploaded to our server and published at a short address on gifup.com, so you can paste it into a forum, a chat or a page. Hosted files are public: anyone with the link can view them, and search engines may index the page they sit on.

  • We store the file, its dimensions, its size, the date, the tool it came from and a hash of your IP address. The hash is used for upload limits and for handling abuse and is deleted after 30 days.
  • The browser that uploaded a file keeps a deletion key for it in local storage. Open the file's page from that browser and a Delete button appears. Clearing browser data removes the key; after that, use the contact page.
  • Files stay up until they are deleted by the uploader, removed after a report, or removed because they break the terms. We may also remove files that nobody has opened for a long time.
  • Hosted files are served through Cloudflare, which caches them at its edge for up to a day and logs requests under its own policy.

Exception two: sending a sticker to WhatsApp

The WhatsApp sticker maker can send a finished sticker to your own WhatsApp. If you use that option, the sticker (not your original video) is uploaded to our server and handed to WhatsApp (Meta) through the WhatsApp Business Platform. That is how it reaches your phone.

  • The sticker is stored under a random one-time code and deleted as soon as it is delivered, or after 30 minutes if the code is never used.
  • When you message our WhatsApp number, we receive your phone number and the text you send, because that is how WhatsApp delivers messages. We keep your number only as a one-way hash for abuse limits, deleted after 24 hours, and we do not message you unless you write to us first.
  • Delivery through WhatsApp is also covered by WhatsApp's business terms and Meta's privacy policy.

What we do collect

GIFUP uses Google Analytics 4 to count visits and see which tools people use. It records the usual anonymous measurement data (approximate location from your IP address, device and browser type, pages viewed, the referring site) and sets cookies to recognise a returning browser. It never receives the files you convert or their names, because those never leave your device. Google's handling of that data is covered by Google's privacy policy.

Our web server keeps standard access logs (IP address, time, requested page, browser) for security and troubleshooting.

Storage on your device

We store your light or dark theme choice in your browser's local storage, and when you drop a video on the home page it is held briefly in the browser's own database so the tool page can pick it up. Both live on your device only, and clearing your browser data removes them.

The Android app

The GIFUP app for Android is the same set of tools packaged together with the conversion engine, so it works without a network connection and your files are processed on the phone. The app contains no analytics and no advertising. When you save a result it is written to the Pictures/GIFUP (or Movies/GIFUP) folder through Android's media store; when you share a video into the app from another app, a copy is kept in the app's private cache until the next shared file replaces it. The app connects to gifup.com only if you press Get a link, and the hosting rules above then apply.

Third parties

Analytics and Cloudflare, which sits in front of the site, are the only third parties here. Fonts, the conversion engine and every script are served from this domain, so your browser does not contact anyone else while you work. We do not sell, share or trade any data, because we do not have any worth trading.

Children

GIFUP is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children under 13.

Your rights

If you are in the EU, the UK or another region with data protection law, you may ask what we hold about you and ask us to delete it. In practice that is limited to analytics records and server logs. Write to us at the contact page. You can opt out of Analytics entirely with Google's browser add-on or any tracker blocker.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
