Discord profile GIF over 10 MB? Fit your avatar or banner

Discord caps animated profile pictures and banners at 10 MB and turns the upload down above that. Pick the seconds you want, frame them and the file comes out under the limit.

Where the 10 MB wall is

When an animated avatar or profile banner is too heavy, Discord shows a message along the lines of "cannot be larger than 10.00 MB" and drops the upload. The limit applies to the file as a whole, so a long clip at a large size is the usual cause. Animated profile pictures and banners also need Nitro; without it the GIF is accepted but shown as a still.

What this page does

Choose Avatar for a square picture or Banner for the 680×240 strip across the top of a profile. Trim the clip to the seconds that loop well, drag the frame over the part that should stay in view, and convert. The GIF is rendered at the right shape and kept under 8 MB, a comfortable margin below Discord's cut-off, so it uploads first time. Everything happens in your browser.

If the clip you want is long, keep the trim at four seconds or less. A profile GIF plays at a small size, and long loops cost weight without being noticed.

If it still will not upload

  • Check the shape. Avatars must be square, banners 680×240 or the same proportion. Both are set here automatically.
  • Check the subscription. Animated avatars and banners are a Nitro feature. Nitro Basic covers animated avatars but not banners.
  • Try the browser version. A few people have found the mobile app refuses a GIF that the desktop app takes without complaint.

The general Discord PFP and banner page goes into where to place the subject and how the picture is cropped on a server.

Questions

Does the avatar have to be 128×128?

No. That is the emoji size. Discord suggests at least 512×512 for an avatar; this page renders 256×256, which stays sharp everywhere an avatar is shown and keeps the file light.

Why is my animated avatar shown as a still?

Animation on a profile needs Nitro. Without it, Discord keeps the first frame and shows that.
